The Blowing Rock
At 4,000 ft above sea level, Blowing Rock (opened in 1933 and North Carolina's oldest attraction) is an enormous cliff overhanging Johns River Gorge. Blowing Rock got its name due to the fact that the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind races with such force that it returns light objects thrown over the edge of cliff. The cliff offers views of Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell (highest peak east of the Rockies), Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock.
