The Eastern Band of Cherokees has almost 12,000 enrolled members who are descendants of the Cherokees who hid out in the Great Smoky Mountains to avoid the infamous "Trail of Tears" march to Oklahoma.

The Oconaluftee Indian Village has been painstakingly recreated to show what life was like for the Cherokees in 1750 and the Cherokee Indian Museum displays a large collection of Cherokee artifacts including centuries old spear points and pottery created by an unknown people over 10,000 years ago.
